Cute things Sam is up to lately:
-Hands in the cookie jar- Sam knows where the jar of sugar-free cookies sits on Grammy’s counter and loves to point to it when he walks by! So cute! Grammy even caught him with his hand in the jar one day while he was sitting on the counter helping her cook. We have a little jar of animal crackers at home that Sam also loves to point to. We’ve even taught him the song “Who Stole The Cookies From The Cookie Jar?” He loves it!
-Climbing up stairs (with Mommy/Daddy behind him of course)- Sam LOVES to climb up stairs with Mommy, Daddy or Grammy behind him and has gotten VERY fast! We definitely have an early climber on our hands. He always looks a little nervous after he reaches the top and can’t quite figure out how to get back down yet, but we love seeing him so excited about his accomplishment when he reaches that last one! I thought climbing like this usually came AFTER walking vs. before. Sam seems very much on the verge of taking independent steps but just not quite ready to take the risk, just yet. Mommy/Daddy definitely aren’t rushing it… Once he’s on his feet we will really be spending lots of energy keeping up!
-Unloading/reloading any interesting drawer, cabinet, etc.- We should have babyproofed cabinets, doors, toilets, etc. much earlier but just got around to it this last weekend after a few incidents where Curious Sam got very curious! He loves to “fill and spill” anything from blocks to the laundry basket to Mommy’s jewelry armoire. He’s also VERY INTERESTED in the dog food/water bowls and we’re constantly pulling him away from them… I’m not sure what the appeal is! Thankfully, he has not ingested any. Yet. Yuck!
-Wanting less and less to be rocked to sleep and more and more to fall asleep in Mommy/Daddy’s arms with a little singing and his little hair pushed back and stroked (I know he’s spoiled!)- I am sad to think our rocking to sleep days might be drawing to a close… Let’s hope not! For the past few nights, Sam has been following a routine something like this: dinner, bath, PJs, little bit of playtime, book or two and falling asleep in Mommy/Daddy’s arms while singing himself to sleep. :-) He has usually been waking 1-2 times nightly (we’re thinking due mostly to teething) and goes immediately back to sleep after 1-2 ounces of bottle.
-Practicing and imitating many noises and sounds- We just love the books we receive from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. One of the latest is called Little Loon and Papa where Papa Loon teaches Baby Loon how to dive. Sam just loves the sound effects in the book and loves to imitate them! He also likes to sniff when Grammy says “What does your nose do?” and likes to growl like his sisters Ella and Addie.
-Eating just about anything that’s not completely unhealthy/considered a choking hazard- Sam is trying just about anything that is not harmful for him these days. We make it a point to expose him to a variety of healthy foods and he doesn’t really have time to get hooked on any one favorite (although he is still obsessed with bananas). Sam had his first taste of PB&J last week- a Smuckers Uncrustable. I know the 12 month mark is technically “peanut butter” age but Mama thought he was close enough to have a first taste. He wasn’t extremely enthusiastic but was pretty tired from not napping well in the afternoon before dinner. We’re can’t wait to try it again soon. :-) Sam has also loved many fruits and veggies I thought he would reject, including cucumbers, black olives, tomatoes, pineapple and clementines. He also tried his first juice box this weekend (apple juice) and did well sipping through the tiny straw. He did enjoy playing with it more than drinking it, though... Thinking purchasing one of these is in our future!
-Getting into mischief- Sam learned how to call 911 from Auntie Anna’s cell phone. She didn’t even realize until the dispatcher called her back immediately… Boy are we in for some fun ahead with our curious boy!
Our weekends lately have consisted of some fun play dates and family activities with Little Man. These have included Barney Live, My Big Backyard at the Botanic Gardens, weekly Kindermusik classes, lots of neighborhood wagon strolls and a monthly “Parents Night In” with other Mommies, Daddies and little ones. Sam really loved the little house in "Seedling Circle" at My Big Backyard...
And even made a little friend inside... He loved touching this little girl's shoulder and putting his arm around her... SO CUTE!
Mommy and Daddy have even had time to sneak in a few Date Nights with a fun overnight trip to Tunica for Valentines Day and another Date Night including our first theater movie in ages (Unknown with Liam Neeson and January Jones). Very suspenseful… We loved it!
We also loved celebrating Sam’s first Valentines Day… Boy has he ever stolen our hearts! Sam received some very special Valentines from his Grandparents, including his first Build-A-Bear named “Pouncer” after the Memphis Tigers mascot, his first stuffed Barney, his first balloon and some special books/DVDs from Mommy and Daddy.
Mommy also made special treat bags for all of the babies at Sam’s “school” (complete with Gerber Puffs, Mum Mum rice rusks, Organic fruit cereal bars and Veggie Crunchies) and bought special chocolate hearts for Sam to give to his teachers. He is definitely vying for the “Teacher’s Pet” title! I want to make sure I teach him to appreciate all of the sweet people who care for him while Mommy/Daddy can’t be with him and also that I take good care of those that care for my baby!
Sam is still enjoying Kids Day Out one day/week at Bartlett United Methodist and will continue there on Fridays through 5/20 and from 6/6-7/14. In the Fall, he will begin Mother’s Day Out at our church, Faith Baptist. He will be going to MDO at Faith two days/week on Tuesdays/Thursdays. Our little boy is growing up!
Mama has also been suffering from Spring/Summer clothing fever and going a little crazy in buying Sam dressy outfits for the warmer weather. Although I had initially intended to only keep Sam in sweet, smocked things through age 1, I’m now wanting to stretch out a little to 18 months or maybe even 2. :-) He’s just not going to be a little baby forever and I want to dress him like one for as long as possible! The opportunity to buy precious outfits via my phone has begun to get me in trouble. So hard to resist the darling outfits popping up in my Facebook News Feed each time I pick up my phone! Sam has four Easter outfits alone, which will come in handy for some special Easter pics we’re planning with live bunnies and chicks. :-) Sam was just 3 weeks old last Easter... Perhaps he will be walking by this Easter and able to hunt Easter eggs by himself?!?! :-)
